Growing up in a Christian home, I spent many an Easter Sunday dressed in my finest attending church service and partaking in the time honored tradition of searching for Easter eggs on the church property. This was often difficult in Minnesota because winter often lasted up until or through the Easter holidays.
One year however, it was unseasonably warm at 70 degrees. Having been unable to leave the house in anything less than a snowsuit the previous five months, the women were excited to finally be able to expose their legs to the sun. Every woman at church service had on the usual pastel Easter dress, paired with white patent shoes.
After the service, everyone trudged out to the grounds behind our pastor, who often said a few words to everyone outside before releasing the kids to their sport. We stopped under a large tree and waited for everyone else to gather. I had to lean against my dad for support, because the wind was fearsome that day, and it surely would have made a kite out of me with my skirt.
The pastor approached and began his speech about the importance of the holiday and family traditions. Everyone listened intently; the other children and I fidgeted, both because of the wind and our impatience. At one point, the strongest gust of wind I have ever felt swooped up around our crowd, effectively revealing the undergarments of every woman and girl in the circle.
There were many gasps, a lot of clutching at hems, even some shrieks. This gust lasted for a good long while, it certainly seemed like forever to my mumsy, who was desperately trying to hide herself behind my father, who was booming with laughter.
When the wind finally departed, a silence descended over the over the entire group as everybody wondered what say in the aftermath of the women flashing all the men and children. Luckily our pastor had a sense of humor; he chuckled and said he was glad he did not wear his Easter dress today, that God had whispered to him to wear pants instead. Everyone laughed nervously, and the hunt commenced.
My mumsy, who usually only wore suits to church, has not worn that dress since.
